Plygain for Beginners
They’re old, they’re powerful, and they’re ours for the learning. Plygain1 carols are an important part of the Welsh Christmas experience, with words and tunes that are centuries old.
On Saturday, 18 November at 11.00 a.m., trac2, Diwylliant Byw3 and Carmarthenshire County Council will be offering a one-day workshop in Plygain singing in the Capel Heol Awst vestry, Lammas Street, Carmarthen. (Admission £5.00)
Dr Rhiannon Ifans4 will be leading the workshop team. Rhiannon is not only one of Wales’ authorities on folk customs – including Plygain and the Mari Lwyd – but is also member of Triawd y Penrhyn a well-known mid Wales Plygain trio.
Not just for men!
Although the Plygain party is traditionally an all-male pursuit, women have been making their mark in recent decades and this workshop will be for everyone with an interest!
And not just for Welsh-speakers!
Translation facilities will be provided so anyone who can sing in Welsh will be able to enjoy the workshop.
